The Kyle Moore Memorial Green Burial Initiative
The Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society (HHGBS) arose out of the Environmental Haliburton (EH!) project to honour the environmental legacy of Kyle Moore, an active EH! member, who died during the winter of 2019.
EH! created the “Kyle Moore Memorial Green Burial Initiative” and began collecting donations from individuals interested in helping to establish a year-round green burial alternative in Haliburton County. The fund raised, approximately $5,000, donated by some 65 individuals.
At the same time, EH! formed a “Green Burial Working Group” and recruited nine (9) members to develop and carry out a plan to promote year-round green burial options wherever possible across the four Townships.
In November, 2019, the EH! Green Burial Working Group became a separate entity, the Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society. The first Board of Directors was appointed in January, 2020.
The Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society received registration as a not-for-profit corporation with the Ontario government and created a draft bylaw for the governance of the organization for presentation at an inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM), held in April, 2021.
The HHGBS established its own bank account and designated signing officers and Environment Haliburton has transferred all funds collected through the Green Burial Initiative to HHGBS. In 2023, HHGBS achieved charitable status with the CRA, in recognition of its green education and public awareness mandate. Memberships fees and fund-raising donations are now supported by the issuance of tax receipts
The HHGBS held its first meeting as a separate organization and began offering memberships on November 27, 2019. The organization completed its fifth year of successful operation in 2024 with many achievements, including the committed 2025 opening of green burial sections in two of the County's townships.
