Kyle Moore Memorial Green Burial Initiative
The Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society (HHGBS) is a recently created organization that arose out of an Environmental Haliburton (EH!) project to honour the environmental legacy of Kyle Moore, an EH! member who died in the winter of 2019.
EH! created the “Kyle Moore Memorial Green Burial Initiative” and began collecting donations from individuals interested in helping to establish year-round green burial options in Haliburton County, in March of 2019. To date, approximately $5,000 has been donated by some 65 individuals.
At the same time, EH! formed a “Green Burial Working Group” and recruited nine (9) members to develop and carry out a plan to promote year-round green burial options wherever possible across the four Townships.
In November of 2019, the EH! Green Burial Working Group became a separate entity, the Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society and the first Board of Directors was appointed in January of 2020.
Today
The Haliburton Highlands Green Burial Society has received registration as a not-for-profit corporation with the Ontario government and has created a draft bylaw for the governance of the organization for presentation at an inaugural Annual General Meeting (AGM) in April 2021.
The HHGBS has established its own bank account and designated signing officers and Environment Haliburton has transferred all funds collected through the Green Burial Initiative to HHGBS.
The HHGBS held its first meeting as a separate organization and began offering memberships on November 27, 2019.
